As a founding member of Gates, visual aesthetic and art direction has always been at the forefront of what drives our DIY ethos. 'Here and Now' is an EP that was meticulously crafted with the visual storytelling in mind at the outset of musical composition. The visual language that was developed for the album cycle was incorporated into many different formats like, vinyl record, CD, printed merchandise, video and various digital platforms.
"Here and Now, the long-awaited EP from Gates, is the New Jersey band’s first release in five years. The EP’s six tracks chronicle a period of tumultuous darkness and graceful rebirth, a process that culminates in the EP’s titular sentiment: a commitment to the here and now, rather than an endless looking backward, an eternal mourning of the past and what isn’t anymore." Wax Bodega
The visual theme utilized in-camera processes such as long exposure, high ISO value and experimental paint with lighting to achieve a graphic, atmospheric and otherworldly appearance. By using smoke bombs, colored flash gels, and LED strobes, we were able to  introduced an organic randomness to the environment. Once we created a library of visual assets, we were able to utilize the most interesting compositions and overlay them to create a cohesive visual narrative. Our small team of creatives explored the wilderness surrounding Austin, TX to scout a location for our backdrop. As soon as we arrived to a dried up portion of Barton Creek known as Sculpture Falls, we instantly felt a sense of inspiration and began conduct our first experiments on-site and continued to do so over the course of 3 days. This phase of visual expression went on to serve as the basis of the overarching album rollout campaign.
